  8. MINUTES

  10. The November 2, 1989 meeting of Netman/CMOT WG was opened by co-chair
  11. Brian Handspicker.  Lou Steinberg was appointed recording secretary for
  12. this meeting.

  15.   1. NEW GROUP NAME
  16.  
  17.      The group has changed its name to better reflect its charter to
  18.      "OSI INTERNET MANAGEMENT".  The charter will be clarified to
  19.      reflect our goals to specify management of IP-based and OSI-based
  20.      local area and wide area networks in the Internet.  The management
  21.      recommendations specified by this group will be based on OSI
  22.      management standards and working drafts, NIST implementors
  23.      agreements and Network Management Forum recommendations.
  24.      For the most part, this group is not defining new standards, but
  25.      rather is recommending how existing OSI specifications and
  26.      implementors agreements can be used for the management of the
  27.      Internet.

  29.   2. NEW DOCUMENTS
  30.  
  31.      To follow through on this charter, five documents will be generated
  32.      and circulated by the end of 1989:
  33.  
  34.        o Implementors Agreements
  35.        o Event Management
  36.        o SMI Extensions
  37.        o MIB Extensions
  38.        o OSI Management Overview
  39.        o Guidelines for the Definition of Internet Managed Objects
  40.  
  41. These documents will all have the super-title:  OSI Management for
  42. the Internet.  These documents will be circulated as Internet
  43. Drafts with the intention that prototypes of each these agreements
  44. will be completed and tested before each is proposed as an Internet
  45. RFC. It is hoped that this testing can be completed by March/April
  46. 1990.
  47. Throughout the creation and testing of these drafts the OIM WG will
  48. attempt to maintain close alignment with the Alert-Man and
  49. Management Services Interface WGs.
  50.  
  51. (a) Implementors Agreements
  52.  
  53.     The implementors agreements will specify protocol, SMI and MIB
  54.     agreements.  The protocol agreements will reference the new IS
  55.     version of ISO CMIP. The IS CMIP is expected to be registered
  56.     in early 1990.  Experts have estimated that it will take about
  57.     3 man-weeks to align a DIS-based CMIP implementation with the
  58.     IS draft.  This was considered to be insignificant compared to
  59.     the value of providing initial CMOT products based on the IS.
  60.     In addition, the protocol agreements will be drafted to specify
  61.     both CMIP Over lpp over Tcp (CMOT) and CMIP over full OSI stack
  62.     (CMIP). In either case, the Application Layer protocol is
  63.     identical.  The SMI agreements will reference the Internet
  64.     extended SMI. The MIB agreements will reference the Internet
  65.     extended MIB-II.
  66.     There is the potential for future work on a version of CMIP
  67.     that runs on top of full ISO Session and Presentation on top of
  68.     TCP instead of LPP. This may provide improved interoperability
  69.     between CMOT and CMIP implementations.  This may not be
  70.     necessary if dual stack systems become popular.  This issue
  71.     will not be addressed in the current documents.
  72.     The implementation examples in the appendix of the current CMOT
  73.     document will be retained in the new Implementors Agreements.

  75. (b) Event Management
  76.  
  77.     An Event Management Model has been proposed which aligns with
  78.     current OSI Event Management and Reporting.  Some concern was
  79.     expressed that the OIM Event Management Model align with the
  80.     work being done within the Alert-Man WG. In addition there is
  81.     an opportunity to align SNMP traps and OIM events codes and
  82.     semantics.

  84. (c) SMI
  85.  
  86.     The SMI Extensions document will reference the current Internet
  87.     SMI and then specify extensions as necessary to support OSI
  88.     Management of the Internet.  In addition, the SMI document will
  89.        reference the current ISO version of SMI in an attempt to align
  90.        with ISO.

  92.    (d) MIB
  93.  
  94.        Tentatively, the MIB extensions document will reference the
  95.        current Internet MIB-II specification.  We currently do not
  96.        know of anything in MIB-II that causes problems to CMOT. This
  97.        should be carefully reviewed by OSI experts.  In addition, this
  98.        MIB document will define extensions necessary to align with OSI
  99.        Management.  These extensions will include:
  100.        DistinguishedAttributes for MIB-II "objects" and events.  There
  101.        is some concern that MIB-II should not include an in-line
  102.        version no.  in the variable codes.  We were assured that the
  103.        in-line version no.  was not defined in MIB-II. The full MIB-II
  104.        and all extensions defined in this document will be mapped into
  105.        the ISO Template language.
  106.        After this MIB document, protocol groups are not expected to
  107.        define new MIBs or MIB extensions.  It is expected that as new
  108.        objects are defined by other working groups (e.g.  OSI) the
  109.        management information associated with those objects will be
  110.        specified by the WG that defines the new object.

  112.    (e) OSI Mangement Overview
  113.  
  114.        The Overview sectionand the Examples appendix of the current
  115.        CMOT document will be retained in a new Overview document.

  117.    (f) Guidelines for the Definition of Internet Managed Objects The
  118.        IETF wrapup (closing plenary) participants recommended that the
  119.        management groups write guidelines for defining managed
  120.        objects.  This will help the non-management groups (e.g.  OSI)
  121.        define the managed objects associated with their services.
  122.        This document is not the same as the ISO GDMO draft.  This
  123.        document is specific to the IETF and may point to other
  124.        document (such as GDMO) as additional reading.

  127. 3. INTEROPERABILITY TESTING
  128.  
  129.    There is vendor interest in availability of an interoperability
  130.    testing lab.  DEC is willing to set up and run such a lab in the
  131.    next few months.  They are currently looking for facilities on the
  132.    West Coast.  Vendors interested in participating in such a lab
  133.    should contact Dave Crocker.
  134.    HP will solicit comments on desired test cases and produce a
  135.    document specifying test scripts.
  136.    HP has offered to host the next OIM meeting focusing on
  137.    interoperability.  This meeting will likely be in January in the
  138.    Bay Area.
